Herbs and Spices

Why Herbs & Spices?

Herbs and spices are among the highest-value crops per square metre — they improve diets, increase farmer incomes and offer numerous value-add pathways (dried herbs, powders, blends, essential oils, extracts and culinary herb mixes).

  • High value, short cycles: Several herbs mature in weeks to months.
  • Diverse markets: local culinary markets, restaurants, processing, cosmetics and export.
  • Sustainability: many herbs require low chemical inputs and suit integrated pest management.

Cultivation Guide — Key Tips

Site & Soil

Choose well-drained soils with organic matter. Most herbs prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0). Avoid waterlogged sites.

Propagation
  • Use certified seed or healthy vegetative cuttings (mint, rosemary, thyme).
  • Nursery-raised transplants produce uniform stands and quicker returns.
Irrigation & Nutrition

Drip irrigation optimizes water use. Apply balanced NPK based on soil test; many herbs do well with lighter nitrogen and higher potassium for aroma.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Use crop rotation, intercropping, biological controls (predatory insects) and pheromone traps. Minimize chemical residues for herbs sold fresh or for extracts.

Harvest & Post-harvest
  • Harvest in the morning for maximum aroma/oil content.
  • Quick shade-drying or tunnel drying preserves colour & aroma.
  • For essential oil production, process fresh material promptly.

Recommended Herbs & Spices (East Africa)

Excellent for tea blends & oil; tolerant to many soils and a reliable cash crop.

High-value rhizomes for spice & medicinal markets; need warm, humid conditions and rich soils.

Chilli Peppers

Strong local and export demand; varieties for fresh market or dried powder production.
